Simple Self-Care Ideas for Busy Moms Who Rarely Put Themselves First

If you’re anything like me, you wake up already thinking about everyone else. The thought of self-care for moms in Kansas City often isn’t on any of our to-do lists.

Lunches. Appointments. Laundry. Emails. Groceries. School drop-offs.
And somewhere in between all of that… you.

Self-care for moms often feels like something luxurious. Optional. A “someday” thing.

But here’s the truth:
You are not meant to run on empty.

And for Kansas City moms balancing work, little ones, school schedules, and everything in between — small, intentional moments of care can change everything.

This isn’t about spa days (though those are lovely).
This is about realistic self-care ideas for busy moms who don’t have hours to spare.

Let’s talk about simple ways to fill your cup — right here in Kansas City. And just so you know, I am also still trying to practice these same things. No one is perfect. We are all just doing the best we can with the spare time we have.

Start the Morning 20 Minutes Earlier (Just for You)

I know. The thought alone feels exhausting. Painful almost even thinking about waking up any earlier than we have to.

But 20 quiet minutes before the house wakes up can feel like magic in the realm of self-care for moms in Kansas City.

  • Sip your coffee while it’s still hot (programmable coffee pot to save more time and energy)
  • Read a few pages of a book
  • Stretch (my mobility has taken a major hit after this third baby) or journal. I love a good gratitude journal!
  • Sit in silence. Peaceful

It’s not indulgent — it’s grounding.

For many Kansas City moms, mornings are the only predictable quiet time. Protecting that space can shift your entire day.

Move Your Body (Without Turning It Into a Chore)

Movement doesn’t have to mean a 60-minute class. I am a recovering type 3 that thinks if it wasn’t a long enough workout or leaving me completely wiped and breathless than it didn’t count. When in reality its about being realistic with this postpartum body and strain I am experiencing with three small kids.

Take a stroller walk around your neighborhood.
Turn on music in the kitchen and dance with your kids.
Try a local class when you can — even once a week.

Even committing to movement twice a week is one of the most powerful mom wellness tips I can give. Its not about going everyday but committing to a few days a week.

Schedule Something Just for You (And Put It on the Calendar)

We schedule pediatrician visits, sports practices, meetings…

But when was the last time you scheduled something just for yourself?

  • A massage
  • A facial
  • A solo Target run
  • A coffee date with a friend

Kansas City has so many cozy spots perfect for a midweek reset:

The Roasterie Cafe
Haven Wellness Spa

You deserve an hour that belongs only to you. One of the non-negotiables I put in place this year was a monthly massage. One hour a month just for myself. It’s been so good for my nervous system and it helping me feel better for my babies.

Get Outside (Kansas City Has Beautiful Spaces for It)

Fresh air works wonders on an overstimulated nervous system. Even a five minute break to sit outside, look into the distance. Maybe even take your shoes off and put your feet in the grass.

Take your kids — or don’t.

A few favorite spots Kansas City moms love:

Loose Park
Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens

These both make for great photo locations too!

Nature is free therapy. And sometimes all you need is a quiet bench and 15 minutes of stillness. Never underestimate the power of a few minutes in the sun with some fresh air to help you reset.

Protect Your Evenings

Evenings can easily become a second shift. Play time, dinner, bath, brushing teeth, putting on pajamas, stories. And then after everyone goes to bed you have just an hour or two for yourself.

After bedtime, instead of folding one more basket of laundry, try:

  • Lighting a candle
  • Taking a bath
  • Watching one show (without multitasking)
  • Going to bed earlier than usual

Self-care ideas for busy moms don’t have to be dramatic. They just have to be intentional. I have found it so helpful for at least one night a week to do something I really like and look forward too. Watching my favorite show on my phone in a hot bath has been a great week night way to unwind.

Preserve the Chapter You’re Living In

This one might surprise you.

One of the most powerful forms of self-care is honoring your story.

So many moms tell me they don’t feel ready for photos.
They want to lose weight. Wait until things calm down. Wait until life feels less chaotic.

But this season — even in the mess — is worth remembering.

Booking a motherhood or family session isn’t vanity.
It’s saying: I was here. I loved them like this.

And years from now, when you’re looking through an album with your children curled up next to you, you won’t be thinking about the laundry.

You’ll be remembering how it felt.

Sometimes self-care looks like stepping in front of the camera instead of hiding behind it. And the beauty of the sessions we offer is that you literally don’t need to do a thing. We take care of your hair and makeup, wardrobe (no need to by a dress you might not wear again), location scouting or access to the beautiful studio, artwork creation (that baby book is done for you!) and no more buying frames only for them to maybe get on the walls with the stock images stuck in them for far too long.

If you are ready to take this off your plate and get a little pampering in I am here for you! Set up a time to chat with me. I can’t wait to hear your story!
