Pregnancy is one of those seasons that can somehow feel incredibly long and unbelievably short at the same time.
For months, you’re waiting.
Waiting to hear the heartbeat. Waiting to feel those first little movements. Waiting to find out who this tiny person will be.
And then, suddenly, you’re nearing the end and wondering how you’re already here.
A maternity photography session gives you an opportunity to pause in the middle of all that anticipation and document this version of you—the one growing your baby.
If you’ve never had maternity photos taken before, you may also have a few questions.
When should I schedule them? What should I wear? Will you tell me what to do with my hands? What if I don’t feel particularly photogenic right now? Can my partner and children participate?
Yes. We’ve heard them all.
So let’s talk about exactly what you can expect at your maternity session with Evelyn & Co. Portraits.
For most expecting mothers, somewhere around 28–34 weeks is a beautiful window for maternity portraits.
By this point, your belly is usually beautifully defined, but you’re hopefully still comfortable enough to move around and enjoy your session.
That doesn’t mean there’s one perfect week for every pregnancy.
Every body, pregnancy, and baby is different.
If you’re expecting multiples, have a history of delivering early, or your healthcare provider anticipates an earlier delivery, scheduling your maternity photographs sooner may make sense.
The important thing is not waiting until the very end if you can avoid it.
You want your session to feel like an experience—not an endurance event.
If the ideal time for photographs is around your third trimester, that doesn’t mean you should wait until then to contact your photographer.
Maternity sessions are best reserved in advance, especially if you need a weekend date or you’re hoping for a particular season.
Reaching out during your second trimester gives us time to plan your session without adding another last-minute task to your third-trimester to-do list.
And let’s be honest:
You’re already going to have enough on that list.
Your maternity photography experience begins before you ever step in front of the camera.
We’ll talk about the overall feel you want for your photographs.
Do you envision something romantic and feminine?
Simple and timeless?
Relaxed and natural?
Do you want to focus primarily on you and your baby bump, or do you want your partner and older children involved?
We’ll also discuss clothing, location, and other details so you’re not standing in your closet the night before your session wondering what on earth you’re supposed to wear.
You don’t have to figure everything out alone.
Part of our job is helping you prepare.

The best maternity-session outfit is one that makes you feel beautiful and comfortable.
Long, flowing dresses are popular for maternity photography because they photograph beautifully, create movement, and emphasize the shape of your growing belly.
Other beautiful options include:
When choosing colors, neutrals and soft, earthy tones tend to photograph beautifully and have staying power.
Cream, ivory, taupe, muted green, dusty rose, camel, soft blue, and other subdued shades can keep the attention exactly where it belongs:
On you and your connection with your baby.
That doesn’t mean you have to avoid color. If you feel incredible in a deep green, burgundy, blue, or another richer shade, wear it.
The goal isn’t to follow a rigid maternity-photography dress code.
It’s to create photographs that feel like you.
If your partner is joining the session, coordination is the goal—not matching.
If you’re wearing a cream dress, for example, your partner might wear a soft blue, taupe, olive, camel, or another complementary shade.
Simple usually wins.
A solid button-down, sweater, henley, or other classic piece photographs beautifully without drawing attention away from the connection between you.
Try to avoid large logos, busy graphics, and extremely bold patterns.
We want people looking at you, not reading someone’s shirt.
Absolutely.
Your maternity session isn’t only about documenting pregnancy.
It’s about documenting your family right before it changes.
If this isn’t your first baby, including older siblings can make your maternity photographs even more meaningful.
We’ll capture moments of them hugging you, touching your belly, snuggling close, or interacting naturally with your family.
And if you have a toddler who has absolutely no interest in lovingly staring at your belly on command?
That’s okay, too.
We’re not expecting perfection.
We’ll work with their personality and attention span.
Sometimes the photograph of your toddler laughing while trying to escape is far more representative of this chapter anyway.
Good.
You don’t need to.
You aren’t expected to arrive knowing exactly where to stand, how to angle your body, where to put your hands, or what to do with your face.
That’s our job.
We’ll guide you throughout your session so you never have to wonder what you’re supposed to be doing.
Maternity posing is especially intentional because small adjustments in posture, hand placement, and angles can beautifully emphasize your belly while keeping your body relaxed.
Sometimes we’ll guide you into a traditional portrait.
Other times, we’ll give you something simple to do—look down at your belly, walk together, hold your partner’s hand, cuddle your child, or take a moment to simply breathe.
You don’t have to perform.
You just have to show up.
Can we talk about this one?
Because maternity photography sometimes gets presented as though every pregnant woman spends nine months glowing in a flowy dress while lovingly rubbing her perfectly round belly.
Real pregnancy can look a little different.
You may be swollen.
You’re probably tired.
Your body doesn’t feel like your usual body.
Your clothes don’t fit the same.
Maybe pregnancy has been wonderful.
Maybe it has been incredibly difficult.
Maybe it’s been both.
You do not have to love every second of being pregnant to deserve photographs of this chapter.
And you don’t have to feel camera-ready when you arrive.
Our job is to use thoughtful posing, beautiful light, flattering angles, and gentle direction to help you feel comfortable in front of the camera.
You might be surprised by what you see when you’re able to step outside of how your body feels and see what it’s actually doing.
You’re growing a person.
That’s worth documenting.
You don’t need to arrive with an entire car full of props.
In fact, simple maternity sessions tend to age beautifully.
But if there’s something meaningful you’d like to incorporate, bring it.
That could include:
We’ll decide whether and how to incorporate it naturally.
Meaningful always wins over trendy.
First, we’ll ease into things.
There is no expectation that you’ll step in front of the camera and instantly know what to do.
We’ll guide you.
We’ll adjust your hands.
We’ll help with your posture.
We’ll tell you where to look.
We’ll fix a piece of hair if it’s doing something strange.
And yes—we’ll tell you what to do with your hands.
As the session continues, we’ll create a combination of portraits.
Some will focus entirely on you.
Some will highlight your belly.
Some may include your partner.
Some may include your children.
Some will be more traditionally posed.
Others will feel relaxed and connected.
The goal is to give you a gallery that doesn’t feel like the same photograph repeated 30 times.
We want to tell the story of this chapter.
If we’re planning an outdoor maternity session, we’re also planning around Mother Nature.
Sometimes Kansas gives us gorgeous golden evenings.
Sometimes Kansas reminds us who’s actually in charge.
We’ll keep an eye on conditions as your session approaches and communicate with you if weather becomes a concern.
Don’t spend the week before your session obsessively refreshing the forecast.
We’ve got it.
Professional hair and makeup are completely optional.
Some mothers love using their maternity session as an excuse to get a little pampering. Others prefer doing their own hair and makeup and feeling more like themselves.
Either option can photograph beautifully.
If you’re doing your own makeup, think slightly more polished than your everyday look rather than dramatically different.
Most importantly, don’t try an entirely new beauty routine the morning of your session.
This is probably not the day to experiment with a brand-new self-tanner.
Pregnancy and rushing are not friends.
Give yourself more time than you think you’ll need before your session.
Eat something.
Drink water.
Make sure you have comfortable shoes available if we’re walking to a location.
If you’re bringing children, pack a few non-messy snacks and anything else that makes life easier.
And don’t schedule six other things immediately before your session if you can help it.
We want you to arrive feeling as relaxed as possible.
You may look at maternity photographs online and see perfect dresses, perfect hair, perfect light, and perfect baby bumps.
But that’s not what makes a maternity portrait meaningful.
The meaning comes from knowing what happened next.
Someday you’ll look at these photographs while holding the baby who was inside that belly.
Later, that baby may be sitting beside you.
Eventually, they may look at the photographs themselves.
That’s me in there?
Yes.
That was them.
And that was you, right before everything changed.
Pregnancy is temporary.
Even when it doesn’t feel temporary.
The kicks eventually stop.
The nursery is eventually finished.
The hospital bag gets used.
The anticipation ends.
And suddenly there’s a baby in your arms.
Maternity photography gives you something tangible from the season when you were still waiting to meet them.
You don’t have to feel perfectly prepared.
You don’t need to know how to pose.
You don’t need to have the perfect dress picked out before you reach out.
That’s what we’re here to help with.
You simply need to decide that this chapter is worth remembering.
We’ll take care of the rest.
