There is something about fall in Northeast Kansas that makes you want to grab everyone you love and take a picture.
For a few short weeks, the trees turn gold and rust, the prairie grasses glow, the evenings cool down, and that beautiful late-day sunlight makes everything feel a little softer.
It’s one of my favorite times of year to photograph families.
And the best part?
You don’t have to drive hours away to find a gorgeous backdrop.
From Kansas City and Lawrence to Baldwin City and Ottawa, our area is full of locations that can give your fall family photographs completely different personalities.
Whether you envision wide-open prairie, colorful trees, historic architecture, water, or a location that simply feels like home, here are a few places to inspire your fall session.
Golden hour is the period near sunset when the sun sits lower in the sky and the light becomes warmer and softer.
For photography, that can mean glowing skin, beautiful backlighting, softer shadows, and the gorgeous golden haze we love in fall portraits.
That’s why an outdoor session may begin later in the afternoon than you expect.
We’re not picking a random time.
We’re waiting for the good light.
And when that light meets Kansas fall color?
Magic.
If you want wide-open Kansas views, Wells Overlook is one of the first places that comes to mind.
Located just south of Lawrence, the 17-acre Douglas County park sits above the surrounding landscape and provides expansive views across the area. (DGC OKS)
For golden-hour photography, elevation is a huge part of its appeal.
Instead of being completely surrounded by trees, you get open sky, native grasses, distant views, and lots of opportunity for that low evening sunlight to pour into the photographs.
Golden • Open • Natural • Quintessentially Kansas
This location would be beautiful for a family who wants photographs that don’t feel overly manicured.
Think flowing dresses, textured sweaters, boots, earthy colors, and kids walking through tall grass as the sun drops.
It also gives your photographs a sense of place.
These don’t just look like fall pictures.
They look like Kansas.
Douglas County currently lists Wells Overlook as open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. (DGC OKS)

If you’re drawn to prairie grasses, boardwalks, natural textures, and a more organic feel, the Baker University Wetlands offer something completely different.
The protected area encompasses approximately 927 acres of wetlands, prairie, and riparian habitat on the south side of Lawrence. (Baker University)
That means we get layers of texture without needing an elaborate backdrop.
Tall grasses.
Open skies.
Trees.
Water.
Trails.
And when those grasses catch evening light?
Absolutely gorgeous.
Prairie • Organic • Soft • Dreamy
This is the kind of setting where neutral and earth-tone wardrobes really shine.
Cream, camel, muted olive, rust, taupe, denim, and dusty rose all make sense here without competing with the landscape.
It also works beautifully for maternity and motherhood sessions because the natural environment keeps the overall gallery soft and understated.

If you’re looking for another Lawrence location with big views and gorgeous evening skies, Sesquicentennial Point deserves consideration.
The park sits on a hillside overlooking Clinton Lake and the Wakarusa Valley. It also includes natural grasses, rock elements, trails, and open gathering spaces. (City of Lawrence, Kansas)
That mixture is wonderful for family photographs because we aren’t limited to a single backdrop.
We can use the grasses, the rocks, or the trails.
And then we can use the horizon when that beautiful evening light starts taking over.
Scenic • Relaxed • Warm • Kansas sunset
This would be especially pretty for a family that wants something natural without going deep into a wooded area.
It’s also ideal if you love photographs with lots of sky.
Because sometimes the Kansas sky deserves to be in the picture, too.

Baldwin City gives us something that fields and parks can’t:
small-town character.
The city is home to nearly 30 blocks of historic brick streets, many dating back about a century. The City of Baldwin City actually notes that the dark red brick streets have become a backdrop for community gatherings, family outings, and photo shoots. (Baldwin City)
Add historic homes, mature trees, charming streetscapes, and the atmosphere surrounding Baker University, and we can create a gallery that feels completely different from a traditional park session.
Historic • Charming • Small-town • Timeless
Imagine walking hand-in-hand down one of Baldwin City’s brick streets while fall leaves line the sidewalk.
Or photographing the kids together near historic architecture rather than putting everyone in the middle of a field.
For families with ties to Baldwin City, this can make the photographs even more meaningful.
You’re not just choosing a pretty backdrop.
You’re documenting your family in your community.

The Baker University area offers another lovely Baldwin City option, especially if your vision leans more classic.
Baker University is part of Baldwin City’s identity and gives the area the character of an established college town. (Baker University)
Mature trees and historic surroundings can be beautiful during fall, particularly when we’re looking for something a little more polished than a wide-open prairie.
Classic • Collegiate • Historic • Refined
This could be wonderful for:
Family portraits.
Senior portraits.
Couples.
Families with a Baker connection.
Or anyone who simply loves historic architecture and tree-lined surroundings.
If photography is planned on university property, we’ll always verify current university policies and permission requirements first.

Ottawa deserves some love, too.
Forest Park is one of the city’s established community parks and offers the kind of mature, green environment that can become especially beautiful as fall color arrives.
The City of Ottawa highlights Forest Park among its local recreational spaces, including amenities such as its dog park, tennis, basketball, and disc golf. (Ottawa KS)
For photographs, I’m less interested in the basketball court and more interested in what an established park gives us:
Trees. Space. Movement.
Classic • Family-friendly • Green • Relaxed
This is the kind of location that works well when you have young children.
They don’t have to stand in one spot.
They can walk.
Run.
Snuggle.
Explore.
And that means we can concentrate on photographing connection rather than trying to convince a three-year-old to maintain a perfect pose.

If fields aren’t your style, let’s go downtown.
Ottawa has a historic Main Street district, and the city continues to identify development of Main Street as an important part of its historic downtown. (Ottawa KS)
Historic buildings, sidewalks, architectural details, and small-town storefronts create a fantastic alternative to nature-heavy fall sessions.
And fall colors can still work beautifully here.
Burgundy.
Camel.
Charcoal.
Cream.
Deep olive.
Suddenly the outfits and architecture do the seasonal storytelling without needing a forest in the background.
Small-town • Urban • Historic • Personal
This could be especially fun for:
Families with older children.
Couples.
Seniors.
Or families who want something that feels less traditional.
Ottawa’s history can also become part of the photographs. The Ottawa Memorial Auditorium, for example, dates to the early twentieth century and was dedicated in 1921. (Ottawa KS)
That’s the kind of local architecture that gives photographs character.

For families closer to the Kansas City side of our service area, Shawnee Mission Park remains one of those locations that gives us an incredible amount of variety.
Lake views.
Wooded areas.
Open spaces.
Trails.
Room for kids to move.
And plenty of opportunities to catch beautiful evening light.
Natural • Relaxed • Earthy • Adventurous
If your ideal session includes more interacting and less standing still, this type of location is perfect.
Walk with your kids.
Pick them up.
Let them run toward you.
Cuddle together.
Forget the camera is there for a minute.
Those in-between interactions often become my favorite photographs from the entire session.

If you want a distinctly Kansas City location with a slightly more elegant feel, Loose Park is still beautiful.
With mature trees, open lawn, a pond, gardens, and the Laura Conyers Smith Municipal Rose Garden, there are multiple looks available without traveling between locations.
Classic • Romantic • Polished • Kansas City
There is one important practical detail: professional photographers working on Kansas City Parks & Recreation property are subject to the department’s photography permitting requirements, so that needs to be handled before planning the session.

This is the question I care about more than:
Which location is the prettiest?
Because pretty isn’t enough.
If you’re raising your kids in Ottawa, maybe photographs downtown will mean more to you than driving into Kansas City.
Baldwin City might feel like home, maybe those brick streets belong in your family story.
Maybe you’re a Lawrence family, perhaps you want the prairie and sunsets that make this part of Kansas feel like home.
If you love hiking and being outside, let’s use a trail.
If you’re happiest downtown drinking coffee and wandering through local shops, let’s not put you in the middle of a field just because that’s what family pictures are “supposed” to look like.
Your session should feel like your family.
Location decisions aren’t only aesthetic.
They’re practical.
Have a toddler?
An open location that gives them room to move may be perfect.
Have older children who would feel completely awkward frolicking through tall grass?
Let’s go downtown.
Expecting a baby?
We may want a location that gives us beautiful scenery without requiring a long hike.
Have three little kids?
We’re probably not choosing somewhere that requires carrying everyone and everything half a mile from the car.
Beautiful photography doesn’t require making everyone miserable to reach the location.
Photography regulations aren’t the same everywhere.
Public parks, conservation areas, campuses, gardens, and privately owned properties can each have different requirements for professional photography.
Some require:
Policies can also change.
Before we officially choose a location, we’ll verify what’s currently required so you’re not worrying about permits while simultaneously trying to convince your toddler to keep their shoes on.
This is the frustrating part about fall photography in Kansas.
We spend months waiting for it.
Then everything turns gorgeous.
Then a storm rolls through and suddenly half the leaves are on the ground.
Our peak window can be surprisingly short.
And because fall also means school, football, soccer, dance, activities, pumpkin patches, festivals, and approximately 4,000 other things on the family calendar, those golden-hour session dates fill quickly.
If you’ve been thinking:
We really need new family pictures…
This might be the year.
Pick a place that feels like home.
Coordinate the outfits.
Bring your favorite people.
And meet me when the sun starts getting low.
We’ll photograph the autumn color.
We’ll photograph the golden light.
But more importantly?
We’ll photograph your family exactly as you are in this little corner of Kansas right now.
Because the leaves will change again next year.
Your family will, too.
